J-8: Online Language Skills Acquisition and Course Community Building with WIMBA
Detailed Description:This is a combined session with the following descriptions: Add a new dimension to your WebCT course by incorporating vocal interaction! This session describes how Auburn University is enhancing hybrid and online courses with HorizonWimba’s EduVoice tools. Through Voice Authoring, Voice Email and Voice Boards, as well as the oral chat feature Voice Direct, students interact verbally with each other and with their instructors. These tools are especially useful in Foreign Language instruction and Distance Education courses, but are equally engaging for any discipline. Pima Community College combined WebCT instructional materials and activities with skills-based online exercises to ensure oral/aural competence in online Spanish courses. Course faculty developed language exercises and activities for students with WIMBA, a web-based voice tool. Students taking introductory-level online courses are using WIMBA to create community online as they discuss course-related issues in their own voices.
