Abstract Text:Pima Community College is systematically developing online courses in WebCT for unique program offerings, such as a Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program, as well as for foundational courses, such as those in the general education. In order to provide consistent course offerings that meet critical college curriculum requirements, Pima Community College uses instructional designers teamed with faculty subject matter experts to develop courses that can be taught by a wide range of full-time or adjunct faculty members who do not participate in the development of the course. This results in students receiving high quality, standardized courses that meet curriculum goals while minimizing faculty preparation time. Thus, instructors can concentrate on the administration of the course and facilitating student success. It is important to note that Pima College's instructional designers are also adjunct faculty teaching their own courses. Instructional designers work with new instructors in courses they have developed and serve as advisors in matters ranging from andragogy to course administration to student assessment. It is not unusual for an instructional designer to be instrumental in the training of new instructors in the use of WebCT as well as in effective online course management and delivery. During a faculty member's initial session as an online instructor, the instructional designer provides ongoing support in every aspect of course administration and management. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of how instructional designers can provide multi-faceted and multi-level design and support services while working with both subject matter experts in the development of courses and faculty actually delivering courses.
