Abstract Text: | Synchronous online instruction is exciting, challenging - and largely unexplored. This presentation will discuss a state-wide initiative for California Community College faculty to 1) research technology's effectiveness with students and 2) develop technology-enhanced instructional materials. The panel includes faculty participants and program directors from the CCC Confer MEET (Modeling Effective Educational Technology) initiative. CCC Confer is an e-conferencing service for California Community College faculty and staff. Combining ubiquituous technologies (HorizonWimba's e-conferencing tools), the service allows participants to meet at a distance with a variety of interactive technologies, including application sharing, chat, and audio conversations. To explore the use of this technology for instruction, CCC Confer implemented the Modeling Effective Educational Technology (MEET) project in December 2004. The MEET project supports the development of instructional materials and methods that incorporate leading-edge, innovative approaches to collaborative online instruction that can serve as models for others to emulate. Twenty grants of $2,000 were awarded to projects that provide educational content using synchronous online conferencing. This session will provide a progress report, research findings related to the project, examples of synchronous best practices, and insights into the process of developing and researching best practices for synchronous online instruction. |
