Abstract Text:How can we ensure consistency, clarity, and community in all of our online courses and help instructors implement best practices? Pima Community College encourages instructional designers and faculty to produce courses that are presented in a uniform and logical way with a strong emphasis on creating clear and concise course materials, instructions, and assessments. When these elements are coupled with opportunities and activities for students to interact on multiple levels, a set of best practices and guidelines that can help ensure student success can be delineated. This session will describe Pima Community College's course design model that employs a general template and incorporates practical learning strategies, a unified set of tools, and a consistent, attractive look and feel. The college's Center for Learning Technology has created course design and development guidelines as well as a set of best practices that provide a well-defined path for instructors to follow that leads to successful online classes. The presentation will focus on the specifics of Pima College's design paradigm and how it is implemented. The elements of the design will be examined in detail and demonstrated. Participants will leave with ideas and strategies for developing their own overall course design and development process. Come find out how you can apply Pima's design paradigm at your institution.
