ROADmap for Online Course Design and Development

Description: Resource Organizer and Design Map (ROADmap) assists designers and subject-matter experts (SMEs) in tracking document revisions and making other decisions related to WebCT-course design and development. ROADmap is a database solution (FileMaker Pro) that was developed to address production issues such as design consistency, organization of learning objects, timeliness of revisions, communication between designers and SMEs, and other related concerns. ROADmap demonstrations and discussion of its impact on the course design process will be provided.

Abstract Text: The Resource Organizer and Design Map (ROADmap) assists designers and subject-matter experts (SMEs) in tracking document revisions and making other decisions related to WebCT-course design and development. ROADmap is a database solution (FileMaker Pro) that was developed to address production issues such as design consistency, organization and management of learning objects, timeliness of revisions, communication between designers and SMEs, and other related concerns.
In the Spring Semester 2004, the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville began the process of moving their RN-BSN completion degree program from the classroom to an online format. As courses for the first two semesters were designed and developed, a number of recurring issues impeded the production process: maintaining design consistency between two designers and across multiple courses, conventions for naming and organizing files on a local server and within WebCT, communicating with faculty SMEs about desired WebCT settings, and other project management concerns.
ROADmap was born out of the need for a more systematic process of designing and developing online courses in the College of Nursing. The lead instructional designer of the project (who was also the campus WebCT administrator) developed the ROADmap system using FileMaker Pro, database software that has built-in network and web delivery functions. Prior to the design and development of courses for the third semester (during spring semester 2005), ROADmap version 1.0 was implemented. This session will provide a review of the specific problems that were addressed by the ROADmap tool as well as discussion of implementation issues and future plans for revision.
