Home Page as Newsletter to Increase Engagement, Relevance and Discussion

Description:Student feedback has shown that using the course home page as a weekly newsletter has made the online course more engaging. The home page /newsletter has also used current events to demonstrate difficult class concepts and has enlivened the course discussions with real-world issues. Changing the home page each week requires little extra effort for those instructors who must keep up with current events, but helps develop a professional skill that the students will need.

Abstract Text:The showcase will have five sections. I. An introductory period that allows participants to quickly identify themselves and their interest in this topic.

II. A brief demonstration of the home page as newsletter will be offered from three different nutrition and food science courses. Special emphasis will be given to the elements that are echoed in the class lessons. Handouts will give some of the student feedback on this application of the home page and how it has benefited the students’ educational experiences.

III. The group will be divided into groups of 5 or 6 to come up with other out-of-the-box ideas for making their courses real-world relevant and or personally relevant to the student. Groups may also come up with ideas or improvements on the newsletter idea and how to employ it.

IV. After the groups have shared their results, another handout will demonstrate the physical/technical steps used to create the course newsletters shown earlier. All new discussion ideas by the group will be made available through the conference web site.

V. Conclusions and closing remarks.
