This presentation is part of 4: Poster Session

Using Pedagogical Advantages with WebCT Vista

Description:Bring a new Course Management System to a faculty is difficult. It is even harder to get them to take a look at the best way to design there classes to get the most out of them. In our training sessions we have set up a way to help them learn the new CMS as well as present them with Pedagogical Advantages.
Presentation Format:Poster
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users

Abstract Text:Using WebCT Vista has allowed Purdue University and three of its satellite campuses to come together to use one Course Management System (CMS). This has allowed us to share resources as well as support. Here at Purdue University Calumet we had other challenges when it came to implementing this new CMS to our campus. The first struggle was that this is our third CMS in two years. We had gone from Web Course in a Box, to Blackboard and now to Vista. So bringing this new CMS to our campus has been a little rough since we have only had Blackboard no more than a year and a half.

We are currently running 162 courses and 2,429 students. With all four campuses we have about 800 courses and 20,000 users. We do not have our whole campus using Vista yet; some of our faculty are still making the transition off of Blackboard and have until August 2004 when we plan to turn off the Blackboard server.

In this presentation what I am going to cover is how when setting up the Vista training for our faculty, we had to take a look at how to bring in Pedagogical Advantages and how to use them when building a course. We do not have an Instructional Design department where our faculty can have help with their course which means it lies back on to what they receive from training and what our support team can provide. Our support team called CMIST (Course Management Implementation and Support Team) consists of faculty from each of the schools which has been involved in all processes of bringing Vista to our campus. So that is why it is important for us to have a very good training session.
