Abstract Text: | Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) is the largest college at Iowa State University. It offers many large enrollment, foundation courses that utilize WebCT as a learning management system. One of the key features of WebCT is its online testing capability. Pedagogical and administrative benefits of online testing include: 1) Multiple choice exams are automatically graded and entered into the grade book. 2) Students have instantaneous access to their grades on multiple choice exams and receive immediate feedback, which increases the teaching value of the exams. 3) Online exams free up class time that would normally be used for testing. In spite its benefits, the use of the online testing capability of WebCT in the LAS college has lagged because of the lack of availability of a secure, monitored environment for administering these exams. In order to meet this need, the Proctored Online Testing Facility was established in the fall of 2003. It is managed by the LAS Center for On-Line Learning (COLL), a college facility that provides technological and pedagogical support for the development, use and evaluation of online instructional materials. Exams are taken in the testing facility where a proctor checks student ID’s and monitors students during the exams. Rather than having exams scheduled for a particular day and time, students are allowed to take an exam during a window of time (typically 5-7 days). In order to maintain exam security during the testing window, instructors typically create a test bank for each exam. This poster will describe the funding, establishment and operation of the Proctored, Online Testing Facility. |
