Abstract Text:The International Studies department at Nassau Community College (Long Island, New York) was recently assigned the task of testing students from any of the State University of New York campuses who are applying for internships in Italy. Part of the application process includes determining the student’s ability to understand and speak the Italian language.

Several factors complicated the process. The department needed a way to deliver a proficiency exam to students attending 64 SUNY campuses scattered all throughout the state of New York. The student responses then had to be evaluated by personnel in Italy, and acceptance notifications had to be sent to students in a timely manner, in order to give them sufficient time to prepare.

The solution was to make the proficiency exam available to SUNY students via the Internet using WebCT. Equally as important, the results of the exam could be easily and quickly evaluated in Italy simply by logging into the WebCT course.
