L-4: How We Made Vista 4 Work -- Administration and Migration
Detailed Description:Northern Arizona University upgraded from Campus Edition 4.1 to Vista 3, then immediately upgraded again to Vista 4. NAU’s lead Vista Admin will discuss how they overcame administrative and communication challenges. The presenters will also discuss the processes and tools that were developed to manage the migration of hundreds of courses from CE 4.1 to Vista 4.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Course Designers, System Administrators, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:How do you convert an entire campus from WebCT Campus Edition to Vista 4 without losing your mind? How do you organize courses and sections on several instances of Vista – development, testing and production? How do you provide technical, pedagogical and moral support to the hundreds of instructors who are learning a new product? Not to mention the thousands of students who may have just been getting used to Campus Edition? How do you communicate all of these changes to the entire campus?

In this highly interactive session, Northern Arizona University's lead Vista Administrator will discuss the challenges of juggling several versions of WebCT across multiple servers. He will also share support strategies – not only how the University leveraged various support organizations to help with the transition, but also what kind of support issues were most common with Vista.

Objectives: - Describe common Vista Admin tasks – both during transition and when things were back to “normal” (does that ever happen???)

- Describe NAU's support structure, and the changes that were made to accommodate the conversion

- Discuss the pros and cons of adding a dedicated support line for faculty

- Discuss administrative best practices – what we learned about security, support and organization

Outcomes - Participants will come away with a better grasp of the challenges involved in upgrading from one system to another

- Participants will have a clearer understanding of different learning context options

- Participants will gain new ideas for supporting different constituencies

This session is recommended for those who are planning an upgrade to (or brand new implementation of) Vista, or who might simply be considering it. This is a follow-up session to the earlier Panel: “How We Made Vista 4 Work,” but attendance at that panel is not required.
