Abstract Text:There has been a growing need at WVU for a user-friendly way that Instructors can request to teach a course in VISTA. Due to the large number of courses at WVU, it is impossible for us to mark all sections in SCT Banner as a VISTA course. Previously, if an Instructor wanted to teach in VISTA, they had to fill out tedious spreadsheets which left a lot of room for error and created a great deal of manual effort on behalf of the support staff. An intelligent online system was created to handle all VISTA requests in an easy and efficient manner. The VCRS, or VISTA Course Request System was developed and implemented before the Spring 2006 term. This system allows users to request a new blank course in VISTA for credit or non-credit. It also allows users to request content from a previous course, an e-Pack, content from our Development server, or a Campus Edition backup. Once the request has been made, support staff can then easily honor the request or send the request back to the user for additional information using status fields in VCRS. Users can also view the history of any requests made. VCRS also uses the LDAP at WVU to authenticate log-on information so that only members of WVU can make a request. In the first two months that VCRS has been online, over 350 requests for new credit and non-credit courses and content have been completed. Our Instructors have reported that this new system is easy to use and that they are more confident that their requests will be completed in a timely manner. VCRS has greatly reduced the number of errors that the previous spreadsheets had caused which lends to a more efficient and successful course management system here at WVU.
