Creating Serious Magic with Instructor Videos

The videos were designed to both improve student performance and provide a human face for the course. Explore the project sequence, learn about its success, and hear recommendations for future applications of the technology within WebCT.

Abstract Text:As part of a grant from the college's Instructional Development committee, a working group of faculty from each department along with the school's Instructional Technology Specialist worked together to explore the effectiveness and practicality of instructor-created videos inside a WebCT course. After covering basic media planning and preparing techniques, each faculty member used Serious Magic's Visual Communicator Pro to create 2-4 short video vignettes to add to their online courses. The goal was to humanize the course as well as provide another way to present material that was hard for students to understand in traditional text delivery. After the first semester, the students and faculty were surveyed about their experiences. This poster session will explain the project sequence, present the findings and make recommendations for future applications of the same technology inside WebCT.
