M-10: University-wide Web Conferencing within WebCT Vista
Detailed Description:There is an increasing demand for web conferencing as a component of WebCT Vista from not only academic programs but also other research and administrative units. This presentation will cover how the University of Alberta integrates Web-4M, a low cost web conferencing suite in WebCT Vista along with the experiences of supporting the University.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Along with the various academic programs, many research programs and administrative units also have found WebCT Vista useful in such activities as collaborative research work and new student advising. All of these constituent units have found at times, a need to go beyond text chat by providing web conferencing in WebCT Vista. There are many situations in teaching academic courses, doing research and assisting students where real times voice dialog between various members improves the effectiveness of the communications. Often, there are situations where real-time slide presentations need to be made to the group, even when participants are at a distance. At the same time, current provincial-wide networks, particularly into remote areas, along with current fiscal constraints require the e-Learning group to the cost of web conferencing at acceptable levels. While there are some excellent hardware and web-based web conferencing systems, the cost may be prohibitive for all but the largest institutions. Incorporating web conferencing in WebCT is fairly simple by providing a URL link in a WebCT Vista course to the web conferencing system. The challenge is providing seamless authentication between the two systems so everyone does not have to re-enter user IDs and passwords multiple times. The other challenge is training and supporting the University on hardware configuration use of the web conferencing software. The University of Alberta chose Web4M from JDH Technologies for the advanced communications suite to integrate with WebCT systems. Web-4M is a low cost Java-based web conferencing suite with an API to allow for custom integration between WebCT Vista and the University's central authentication system. The system also performs very well on dialup network connections still found in many remote areas of the provinces.
