M-2: Back to Basics: Adding the “A” to Tech (TEACH)
Detailed Description:Distance learning often focuses on the technical aspects of course design. While this is essential to online course development, it is easy to forget the active role you play as a teacher in an online classroom. This session is designed to “reintroduce” the basic but often forgotten skills that are needed to create a student centered learning environment. Attention, assurance, and advocacy help put the “A” back in “Tech” to create “TeAching.”
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT
Abstract Text:This session is geared toward a beginning/intermediate online instructor and will feature the skills, tools, and enough pedagogy to support online instructors as they craft their on line teaching methodology.

The session will open with a discussion on the importance of placing an emphasis on Learning over Distance in Distance Learning Course development. A hands-on activity will be used to explore how to set the realistic time expectations necessary to develop and maintain a successful student centered course. A visual presentation about how to create a “real” and approachable pedagogical stance in the virtual classroom will be combined with an activity on how to make the sometimes sterile online atmosphere into a rich classroom environment and not simply an on line correspondence shell. Various WebCT tools and functions will be used through out the presentation and will help to demonstrate how to create an engaging and vibrant learning community.

Our objective is to place an emphasis on the art of teaching while embracing the technology of Distance Learning. This is not a discipline specific session as this material is applicable and appropriate for instructors from any disciplines who are interested in or teach online courses.

Our methods of teaching will include both practical and theoretical components. The presentation format will include a combination of hands on learning activities, discussions, and visual presentations.

Our sincere hope is that each instructor will leave our session with a renewed enthusiasm for incorporating student centered and active learning techniques within the virtual learning environment.
