J-10: Stability and Standards: Reaping Benefits from Vista Production Administration Mentoring
Detailed Description: | The voice of experience is vital when implementing any enterprise scale application. As a result of client feedback as well as having hosted Vista for client schools, WebCT Services can now bring this experience to the customer through VPAM. Presenters will include both client and vendor representation to capture the full spectrum of VPAM. The presentation will discuss VPAM participation, results of participating, and the follow-up certification audit.

Abstract Text: | While there may always be hotfixes and service packs, some of the problems experienced with Vista are the result of rushed deployments on non-standard configurations. A methodically planned implementation is at least half the battle in achieving system stability. This presentation will describe how WebCT's VPAM program can help client schools achieve a more robust system deployment. VPAM is a program that has been designed to address problem areas such as cluster and network configuration, production job scheduling, system administration, and monitoring. Numerous possible cluster and network configurations are presented and discussed with recommendations about which might be appropriate for a given client. WebCT has been hosting Vista for client schools and shares the experience of building a production schedule as a part of the program. The program also covers areas beyond just getting the system up and running, such as what tasks are necessary to properly administer the application, and what events and processes should be monitored. Many WebCT customers migrated from Campus Edition to Vista. CE was far less complex, and may have created a false expectation that Vista would be similarly easy to implement. The result has been installs that lack the necessary planning to be successful. This program is vital to help technical staff achieve the proper mindset to deploy a truly enterprise-scale application.
