Abstract Text:The presentation will provide an overview of a full time 17 week remedial EFL course. This course blended online and classroom learning, making intensive use of online quizzes, assessments and writing tasks, including a cross-cultural exchange with Japanese students. A key feature was the “LOAF” Approach, (Little, Often And Focused). Students produced small amounts of work, which were assessed with zero-tolerance for error. Slightly longer pieces of work went through intense process writing until a final error free draft was produced. Students were also expected to utilize the meta-language of English grammar. Other distinguishing features of the course included face to face orientation focusing on information & file management, daily non-negotiable deadlines, cumulative assessment, and a particular focus on grammar and writing, the main areas of weakness for these students. The participants had failed English assessments, and had a history of failure or low achievement. The college has had a history of poor retention of, and limited success with such students. Evidence of the success of this course in retaining students and enabling them to succeed will be presented. The presentation will also discuss ongoing and future DWC E-Learning initiatives as well as the importance of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in online learning.
