M-11: WebCT 151: Outcomes-Based Online Training for New Online Faculty
Detailed Description:To meet the growing demand for “anytime, anywhere” faculty training, WebCT 151, an outcomes-based online course, replaced face-to-face workshops to better prepare faculty for the online classroom. Developed by instructional designers, this course combines online training materials with skills-based exercises. WebCT 151 allows faculty to demonstrate competence with course-building and course management tools. WebCT 151 includes a variety of training modules for faculty teaching pre-built online courses to those developing new hybrid and Web-enhanced courses.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:How can we move from workshops where the main outcomes are appreciation, enthusiasm and familiarity to training skills acquisition? Pima Community College's online training model employs more than presentations on how WebCT tools work and principles of online pedagogy. WebCT 151, a required outcomes-based online training course for new and current online instructors developed by the PCC Center for Learning Technology, prepares faculty with skills-based exercises for actual online classroom experiences. Created by instructional and graphics designers and WebCT faculty trainers, this course presents both instructional materials and hands-on practical exercises constructed with a consistent template for an attractive look and feel. Tools including Techsmith's Snag-It, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia's DreamWeaver MX and Captivate were used to construct course content and exercises. Following a mandatory in-person two-hour orientation session to the course, faculty teaching fully-online, hybrid and web-enhanced courses are added to WebCT 151 for non-credit professional development training. A credit version of this course, ETT 110 – Special Topics in Educational Technology: “WebCT for Online Teaching and Learning”, is also available for adjunct faculty interested in using WebCT in their traditional courses or those identified to teach fully-online courses. A three-hour F2F wrap-up session follows the online training to complete their preparation. The required core of modules in the series for faculty teaching pre-built courses takes new online faculty approximately 50 hours to complete and includes modules and lab-type exercises and assessments in online pedagogy, communication tools, assignment and assessment tools, and course management. Faculty teaching web-enhanced courses also complete modules and exercises to help them prepare content, manage files, incorporate multimedia, and include virtual library resources. Faculty experienced in Campus Edition 3.x also complete a module on transitioning to version 4.1. Come find out how you can apply Pima's online training course design at your institution.
