K-7: Enhancing Student Learning Through WebCT: Effective Strategies, Tips, and Solutions
Detailed Description:Trials and strategies, together with simple (and not so simple) solutions will be described and demonstrated to provide ideas on how to enhance student motivation and learning in online courses. Several software programs will be described, and portions of presentations used in WebCT courses will be showcased. How an Educational Leadership Program doubled the number of students by offering its Masters degree online also will be discussed.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:This session explores the challenges experienced as well as the strategies used by professors to solve the problems that emerged while teaching WebCT courses at the University of New Mexico. Some of the solutions came in the form of relatively inexpensive commercial software programs (e.g., Camtasia, Visual Communicator Pro, and Impatica), and portions of several presentations derived from using these software solutions will be showcased. Other solutions came in the form of work arounds that required time and energy rather than ready-made commercial solutions. Additionally, the presenters will introduce structuring strategies they used to enhance the flow of their WebCT courses. They also will discuss the interaction opportunities provided to students through WebCT tools and other methods. Reactions by students through evaluations of the various strategies used in these WebCT courses also will be featured. Finally, presenters will focus on how the entire Educational Leadership faculty moved from teaching all of their courses on the main campus to a commitment to serve the more rural areas of the state, requiring them to leave their comfort zone and teach via ITV and then through WebCT to offer an entire Masters degree online.
