I-7: Designing Faculty Workshops, Blending Face-to-Face and WebCT Technologies
Detailed Description:This session proposes a new approach to designing faculty development workshops. It encompasses the process followed by the design team as well as the format of the workshop. The presenters will illustrate their presentation with examples borrowed from a three-week long, WebCT workshop designed to enable faculty to apply instructional design strategies to their course development; develop an understanding of instructor-tailored course management tools; and integrate web-based technologies through WebCT in a face-to-face environment.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Technology in education is seen as an “important instrument” (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking 1999) and its integration, as a “significant force driving change” (Jacobsen & Hunter 2003). An increasing number of research is linking technology-enriched learning environments to improved higher-order thinking skill and showing that, by using technology as an educational tool, students are better prepared for “real work” skills and future success in this new technological society (Ennis and Mocanu 2004). This process of integrating technology in academe has significantly changed both the way faculty think (Turkle 2004) and the role they play in the learning process (National Survey of Student Engagement 2003). Yet, while most institutions provide technical support and training, few offer an integrated view of instruction and technology, thus jeopardizing the successful integration of technology in the classroom.

In this presentation, we propose to address some of these issues by describing a different approach to designing faculty development workshops using WebCT. We will first outline the recommended process before describing the format of the workshop itself, enabling the participants to get a holistic understanding of the concept. The presenters will then illustrate this new approach with key examples borrowed from a three-week long, electronic mediated workshop that was designed to allow faculty to apply instructional design strategies to their course development; develop an understanding of instructor-tailored course management tools; and integrate web-based technologies through WebCT in a face-to-face environment.
