Abstract Text:An initiative in the Research College of Nursing Strategic Plan focused on development of web-based learning to increase flexibility for students, allowing them to accommodate other commitments in their lives. The College developed a 5 year plan to web-enhance the undergraduate and graduate nursing curriculum with the goal of eventually using webct for online education for the graduate tracks. A long term strategic plan was developed and implementated. Four phases and appropriate deadlines were identified, which resulted in taking the curriculum from paper-and-pencil to web-enhanced or online in 5 years. Decisions were made regarding how best to develop faculty for teaching in an online environment, which webct template to use, and the format and data to include in webct tools such as: calendar, syllabus, content modules, discussion threads, quizzes/surveys. Phase 4 concluded with asking students from the last three years of the four-year traditional BSN program as well as students from the one-year accelerated BSN program to participate in a one hour focus group particular to their year in school and program. An analysis of the data reveals that in general, after the initial adjustment period, students found most of the components of the web-enhanced curriculum contributed to a positive educational experience. Course blueprinting was identified as one of the most crucial aspects of a web-enhanced curriculum Most students agreed that web-enhancing the curriculum has produced a positive education experience that is student friendly, time efficient, and educationally effective.
