G-13: WebCT Vista Implementation: Building a Plane While Flying
Detailed Description:In July 2003, Weber State University departed on a WebCT Vista implementation journey. Our crew was prepared for challenges such as maintaining parallel learning management systems, changing flight plans for a new SIS and web portal, calming captive passengers (a.k.a. faculty and students), and transporting over 400 online courses. Our presentation focuses on the surprises we found in mid-air. Come learn about the questions you should ask as you prepare for your WebCT Vista implementation journey.
Presentation Format:Showcase

Abstract Text:Weber State University began implementation of WebCT Vista in July, 2003. Successful Vista implementation and integration with other campus systems requires significant planning and coordination of various groups within the organization. The following bullets highlight some of the things we've learned in our Vista implementation journey.

• Design your learning context with integration with your SIS and group administration in mind. • Make sure you understand how templates work in Vista, and how files are linked between templates and sections. • Many faculty will resist change. Faculty support and training is critical. • Vista requires the support and coordination of many different kinds of people across the organization (database administrators, application administrators, instructional designers, faculty & student technical support, organization administrators, faculty trainers, etc.). Good communication between these entities is critical. • Make sure you have a good backup and restore plan for disasters (database backups and section archives). • Some of the specific problems we've faced include LDAP authentication issues, integration problems with SIS, portal, and other campus information systems, course template linking problems, and end-of semester change management.
