I-6: Creating and Using a Learning Object - Start to Finish
Detailed Description:From course conceptualization to technical implementation, we will present an overview of the collaborative work between a multimedia developer and a history professor to create learning objects for a World Civilization course. We will discuss the development of SCORM compliant learning objects made in Flash and Dreamweaver and how they are imported and incorporated into a WebCT Vista course. We will also provide learning objects that are easily customizable for individual courses.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Institutional Research and Assessment Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Educators hear about Interactive learning, Flash, Learning Objects, SCORM, Manifest makers and XML, but may not know how these concepts and applications can be used to enhance online education.

These concepts may best be understood with an overview of the development of a learning object from conception to implementation.

A summary of the collaboration efforts between a Kent State University multimedia developer and a History professor on the creation of a highly interactive World Civilization course provides insights into the thought-processes of design and pedagogy along with the technical implementation.

This session provides a practical step-by-step overview of creating learning objects and using them in a course. We will show how a learning object is created using Macromedia's Flash templates and how to make it meet accessibility and SCORM standards. We will also demonstrate how an XML document can be used to update the quiz without reopening Flash. We'll then introduce a manifest maker and demonstrate how to get your learning object into and interacting with Vista.

These learning objects will also be discussed in terms of their impact in the course, student feedback and ideas for the future. We'll discuss how to use learning objects as effective tools in your course and how a course management system, such as Vista, can enhance learning.

The learning object development procedure and links to relevant downloads will be provided to participants. Learning objects and the accompanying XML files will also be provided to participants to customize for their own use.
