Abstract Text:As the nature and adoption of information technology in the learning environment changes, instructional technology professionals and faculty must work collaboratively to ensure that learning management systems (LMS's) improve the quality of teaching and learning, contain or reduce rising costs, and provide greater access to higher education. Institutions of higher education will need to use learning-centered technologies to make instruction more convenient, accessible, and effective.

After three years of using WebCT's Campus Edition software, North Carolina State University (NCSU), in its commitment to learning in a technology-rich environment, invested in an enterprise level management system, WebCT Vista. In Fall 2004 and Spring 2005, NCSU piloted WebCT Vista with a targeted group of faculty and students involved in a distance education Master's Degree program and several large-enrollment undergraduate courses. To prepare for the transition and to facilitate successful implementation of the pilot, a coordinated committee approach, comprised of both faculty and instructional technology professionals, and a workgroup assigned with the WebCT Vista planning and daily implementation tasks, worked together to facilitate the initial transition of the campus from WebCT CE to WebCT Vista via the pilot efforts.

This session will provide information on the planning, training, support structures and assessment involved in the WebCT Vista pilot, including outcomes and lessons learned, as well as plans for the Fall 2005 general release of this product to the campus community.
