K-3: Analyzing Your WebCT Server Logs
Detailed Description:Do you know who is accessing your WebCT server, when they are accessing it, where they are coming from and which browser they are using? This presentation will show how to use tools and techniques to analyze your WebCT log files and mine data for the answers to these and several other questions. Demonstrations of the software required to process the data and advice on how to interpret the results will be provided.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Institutional Research and Assessment Staff, Senior Administrators, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Which students are logging on to your institution's WebCT server, when they are logging on, and from where? What time of day, week or year is your server is most active? Which browsers do your students use to access WebCT? Did particular student logon last week? Which course is the least active? So many questions, so little time!

Countless answers to these and other questions are buried deep within your WebCT server log files. This presentation will demonstrate how to use various tools and techniques to analyze these files and mine data for the answers to the questions posed above, along with other useful information concerning the students and courses on your WebCT server. In this session, we will cover:

- A brief introduction of how WebCT activity is logged with emphasis on the capability and limitations of what can be retrieved from the logs. - The necessary changes your WebCT server configuration to maximize the data captured, as well as the strategies for archiving and rotating log files. - The tools available for analyzing the data, performing DNS lookups, and generating reports in HTML format. - A concise primer on the most useful reports, their interpretation, and the knowledge that can be obtained from them. - Going beyond the tools: Strategies for the advanced analysis of logs.

In our presentation we will demonstrate several reports based on data collected from our WebCT Campus Edition server at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. We will give actual demonstrations of the tools and techniques used by our institution throughout this session with the desire all attendees will be able to apply what was learned within their own institutions.
