A-7: Managing a Self-Paced Online Course
Detailed Description:This presentation addresses the benefits of self-paced instruction for both students and instructors. Several courses using different implementations of self-pacing will be examined so that participants will have a framework in which to evaluate the adaptability of their own courses to a self-paced format. Participants will begin to create their own “Learning Agreement”, choose appropriate WebCT tools and selective release settings for their own courses, and discuss methods of successfully monitoring student progress.
Presentation Format:Paper
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:This paper addresses the rationale and benefits for both students and instructors of WebCT-based, self-paced instruction, and it offers instructors a plan for creating and managing such courses. Current pedagogical theory regarding student learning outcomes in self-paced courses are referenced. Examples are presented of several WebCT courses using different implementations of self-pacing so that participants will have a framework in which to evaluate the adaptability of their own courses to a self-paced format. Parameters for making a sound decision to adopt such a course of instruction are also presented. Various instruments for managing self-paced instruction are discussed, including learning agreements, tiered content modules, selectively released content, interactive content, and various assessments. Also discussed are anecdotal reports of difficult situations encountered and solutions to those pitfalls, with an accompanying list of practical steps to forestall problems. The intention is to enable instructors to wisely choose, implement, and manage a course in which students set their own appropriate learning pace and still maintain a high level of learning.
