I-3: Back To The Future: Reflection On Experiential Learning Using WebCT
Detailed Description:This session showcases Edge Hill's WebCT portal, which supports the development of students as reflective practitioners and promotes the ethos of lifelong learning. Use of video illustrates the acquisiton of reflective skills by demonstrating the reflective process in experiential learning. This is one of the key innovative approaches, which add significant value to the learners' engagement and enthusiasm for their own development.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Anecdotally there is a consensus that reflection is a term frequently used but inadequately defined and/or understood; this presentation will highlight the significance of reflection on experiential learning with reference to theoretical models. Although reflection during group work, e.g. tutorials, can be assessed, most of the research concentrates on written reflective accounts, which have been adopted and adapted for educational purposes. Reflective practice has now become synonymous with ‘professional practice.' For students, reflection and portfolio development are frequently major components of their chosen course of study; this can take the form of submitting reflective pieces of work for assessment and/or keeping a reflective journal. Students can find this process problematic; it is acknowledged that whilst students may have excellent reflective skills they might have poor writing skills. It is essential for educators to provide an environment in which learners feel ‘safe' to express themselves in order for learning and reflection to take place. A WebCt platform has been used at Edge Hill to address these issues and assist students in becoming reflective practitioners. This is a multimedia ‘one-stop-shop' for information and resources; video is used to illustrate examples of experiential learning and the reflective process. Online reflective journals have been incorporated which enable academic staff to provide feedback, whilst the discussion tool can be used for asynchronous debate with peers on relevant educational issues and sharing of reflections in a safe environment. This innovative portal adds value to learners' understanding of experiential learning and reflection, and the video and interactive component add a new dimension to maximise the impact of the process.
