A-12: Using WebCT to Meet the Challenges of Large Lecture Classes
Detailed Description:Large classes involving hundreds of students are a reality at most colleges and universities. The lack of instructor-to-student interaction and the task of managing repetitive reporting functions can become enormous roadblocks to productivity for both teacher and learner. However, through the supplemental use of WebCT, instructors of such on-site lecture classes have a means to reduce repetitive administrative tasks and improve student learning.
Presentation Format:Paper
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Institutional Research and Assessment Staff, K-12 Educational Staff, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:This hour-long session will involve the presentation of a paper entitled, "News from the Lecture Hall: How a Course Management System (CMS) can be used to improve student learning in large lecture classes."

A demonstration of WebCT course elements that were employed in a college lecture class will include information on how the effective use of WebCT features (grade book and self-tests) produced measurable gains in student achievement.
