F-6: Experiences in National Level Implementation - Success Story in Croatia
Detailed Description:How to develop and deploy efficient WebCT customer support will be presented and explained. Learn about our experience in training and educating university teachers and educators. Practical problems will be addressed like establishing a helpdesk, introducing new service to the University, developing courses, localization, and language and code-page specifics.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT
Abstract Text:The presentation will cover our experiences in building support services. Creation, development and evolution of support services will be explained. Transformation from a team of one to several teams divided into: technical infrastructure team (responsible for technical issues like server maintenance, application, upgrading, installing patches, creating backups, etc.), helpdesk team (responsible for creating courses and user management), e-learning integration team (responsible for integration with other information systems and authentication systems such as Radius and LDAP) and, finally, education team (responsible for creating, developing and conducting lectures for WebCT designers), will be presented.

Technical support team has developed from a single administrator with a WebCT service as a task rather than full job, to Windows system administrator dedicated only to WebCT service.

Helpdesk team began with one technician with e-mail address for answering user questions to 8 hour-per-day telephone service and mailing list with 2 hours grace period for answers.

Integration team is the youngest because integration emerged last in the process. With developing other systems it was obvious that need for integration is very big.

Education team developed right from the start with two days face to face workshop for professors who are also (in most cases) designers and developers of all materials. Evolution of training will be presented and explained from two days F2F workshop to 4 week long on-line course “How to use WebCT”.

Major breakthrough happened with the localization of WebCT interface to Croatian language. This way WebCT became more accessible to teachers and students who are not familiar with English language. Other problems with code specific characters were solved with transforming ISO 8859-1 to UTF-8 code standard.

Conclusions and recommendations will be given at the end of the presentation.
