F-2: Beyond the Technology: Supporting Adult Learners in Online Learning
Detailed Description:The provision of effective support services for distance learners has an impact on student satisfaction, recruitment, and retention. Developing a student service model that incorporates a “high tech/low tech” approach; is holistic, consistent, and continuous; and recognizes the need for technical, academic, and personal support from program start to finish is an integral part of creating a learning environment dedicated to student success. This session considers some possibilities for creating an effective support environment.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Driving student success: Attracting, supporting and retaining learners
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:As traditional institutions embrace on-line and distance education they are faced with the challenges of creating effective learning environments for non-traditional, distance education students. The provision of effective student services for adult, distance learners has an impact not only on student satisfaction but also on student recruitment and retention. Developing a student service model that incorporates a “high tech/low tech” approach; is holistic, consistent and continuous; and recognizes the need for technical, academic, and personal/social support services from program start to finish is an integral part of creating a learning environment dedicated to student success.

The underlying hypothesis on which this presentation is based is that while adult, distance students require an enhanced level of support services to meet their specialized needs this is often ignored or neglected within tradition, on-campus institutions. Given this assumption, a model has been developed to illustrate and connect the provision of a broad range of services with benefits to both the institution and the students. Examination of existing service delivery models will be provided as examples of delivery options. In addition, materials that have been developed in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta to support students in the on-line learning environment will be demonstrated.

Participants in this workshop will be encouraged to share their own experiences with the delivery of student services at their institutions.
