F-7: Faculty Training and Development Academy: Enhancing Learning with WebCT Tools
Detailed Description:The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) has adopted WebCT Campus Edition, but relatively few faculty had incorporated the WebCT tools in their instruction. The “Enhancing Learning with WebCT Tools Academy” model was created to address this issue. This presentation will showcase the model Academy, provide implementation tips, and demonstrate faculty and student success.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The Technologies Training & Development Activity of UCO's Title III Grant Program and Academic Technologies & Training, established a comprehensive Faculty Development Academy to incorporate WebCT tools in traditional courses. The focus was “Enhancing Learning with Technology Tools.” The program's phases included: (1) Online and face-to-face training, development support, best practices presentations by active faculty users, and pilot presentations by participants with facilitator and peer feedback. (2) Implementation of WebCT tools, with continued technical and design support. A post-academy support program for participants has been established including: (a) direct support in maintenance and further development of instructional technology materials, (b) an on-line discussion community of faculty and instructional technology specialists, (c) on-line student evaluations about the learning process in enhanced courses, (d) analysis of retention and success of students enrolled in the courses, and (e) lessons learned evaluation, based on evaluations and feed-back from participating faculty and their students for adjustments for future Academy programs. Beyond costs associated with facilitators and basic technology resources, the associated program costs include: • $1,500 stipend to each participant paid in two installments. Participants were paid $750 upon successful completion of the training, and an additional $750 paid upon implementation of the enhanced course in the following semester. • $1,000 for food and refreshments for participants during face-to-face meetings.

Statistics gathered from the Summer and Fall 2004 academy sessions show that 2,525 students in 99 courses were affected by the technology enhanced courses. Based upon these numbers, it is expected that in one school year (Fall, Spring and Summer semesters,) a cumulative effect of approximately 30 percent (4,000 students) of the University of Central Oklahoma's student body will be attending courses effectively enhanced with technology. This represents a very solid step in the effective incorporation of technology in teaching and learning at UCO.
