Abstract Text:This session shares experiences Dakota State University has acquired in integrating the use of TabletPC with WebCT to facilitate teaching and learning in both online and offline environment. The session focuses on two primary areas of the integration: (a) utilizing the digital ink of TabletPC to promote dynamic and flexible assessment in WebCT, and (b) taking advantage of the portability of TabletPC to facilitate ubiquitous course access and class interactions in WebCT. Case examples include: (1) using digital ink for more effective and flexible information presentation and feedback, (2) making note-taking part of course assignment, (3) redesigning lecture notes to facilitate student note-taking, (4) using the quiz/survey tool in WebCT for quick surveys and mini tests to monitor student learning progress and adjust teaching pace, and (5) implementing online application services (CITRIX) to enable on-demand mobile access to instructional software tools. The session will also discuss findings from survey results that reflect students' perceptions of the advantages and limitations of TabletPC in accessing course materials, information presentation, utilizing online resources, facilitate online communication, and support collaborative learning. Finally, the session will discuss challenges and problems DSU has experienced in using TabletPC in classroom teaching, particularly hardware/software support services, classroom management, and instructor's control over material access and distribution in the online environment.
