Abstract Text:In today's ever expanding market for online learning, institutions of higher learning are perpetually in need of highly qualified online facilitators to deliver / facilitate virtual and web-supported programs. Finding experienced online instructors who are masters at facilitating communities of learning is no easy task. Faculty and college administrators are in a constant search for experienced experts who are functional with WebCT and willing to contract as adjunct instructors to facilitate their Online degree programs. The selection process is often very time consuming and can be extremely costly, given the wide geographic dispersion of qualified candidates.

Using an Online Adjunct Assessment Center (built with WebCT), the College of Management and Business at NLU has been able to optimize the selection process, requiring adjunct candidates to complete a series of online assessment activities which are subsequently evaluated by a Faculty Assessment Panel. A set of rubrics are used by the panel to reach consensus on the assessment of candidates.

This presentation will showcase a live model of the Online Adjunct Assessment Center. Participants will be presented with an overview of the design of the Online Adjunct Assessment Center and a summary of its key features. Participants will then experience a simulated set of assessment activities. The simulation will enable participants to experience both the role of an adjunct candidate and member of the college faculty assessment panel. Participant questions, observations and comments will be addressed throughout the presentation / showcase. Participants will be furnished with handouts of the Online Assessment Center's design, key features and elements of the simulation.
