F-12: Reliable Linking to Journal Articles in WebCT
Detailed Description:The session will present three effective methods educators can use to provide stable and reliable links to available licensed online journal content via WebCT. The three methods are: (a) persistent linking services provided by database vendors, (b) Digital Object Identifier (DOI), and (c) OpenURL. The presentation will describe the advantages and disadvantages of each linking method. Alternative linking methods for non-licensed journal content will also be discussed.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The development and widespread adoption of new standards and linking technologies, in combination with the increasing availability of online journal literature in academic libraries, offers educators new opportunities for reliably connecting students to journal articles via WebCT. The session will present three linking methods that treat online journal articles as unique digital objects, and explain why the linking methods are both more reliable and versatile than normal HTML web links. The methods include: 1) persistent linking services available in online databases; 2) the Digital Object Identifier (DOI); and 3) OpenURL. The advantages and disadvantages of each linking method will be described, and examples of each linking method will be presented, with explanations of how the links can be included in WebCT. Since the presenters' own campus uses WebCT Campus Edition, that environment will be demonstrated in the presentation. Additionally, the components and architectures of each type of link will be examined, and explanations of how attendees can easily find or construct their own links will be given. Systems that give DOIs and OpenURLs their superior stability and reliability will be covered in the session, including an overview of the organizations that developed and support the systems. For content that is not available from a library's licensed online resources, alternatives means of available journal article linking will be briefly discussed. Finally, the session will provide an example of how an institution can support faculty who wish to link to journal articles from within their WebCT course pages. The presenters' own experience has shown that faculty, even those involved in distance education, are often unaware of the technological features included in a typical academic library's collection of electronic resources. The presentation will increase faculty awareness of available technology that will make the integration of journal literature in WebCT more effective and reliable.
