A-10: Tracking Faculty Uses of Online Learning Tools: A Statewide Perspective
Detailed Description:Increasingly higher-education systems have begun implementing enterprise-wide computer software solutions to handle student information, financials, human resources, and other educational and administrative needs. This presentation describes the results of a system-wide survey of faculty in their use of (or lack of use of) online learning tools and techniques that provide critical data during a statewide deployment of Vista.
Presentation Format:Paper
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Academic Technology Directors, Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Institutional Research and Assessment Staff, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Most chief information or chief technical officers at collegiate-level institutions recognize the necessity for implementing enterprise-wide, interconnected solutions to allow effective management of their course management systems (CMS) and other data-rich systems. While such implementations may meet technological requirements and specifications, they may not anticipate the needs of end-users of such systems.

As part of its statewide deployment of Vista, the University System of Georgia saw a unique opportunity to learn more about the impact of a technology innovation from the outset. The System wanted to establish baseline data on CMS use among faculty to provide a method of advising and assisting individual institutions in developing support, services, and training for faculty and to inform campus strategies for encouraging faculty not currently using the CMS to try using it in their instruction planning and implementation.

To facilitate the collection of this benchmark data, the System developed an online survey based on the Educause Center for Applied Research (ECAR) Faculty Usage of CMS Study conducted for the University of Wisconsin System. Additional questions, specifically about CMS within our System were included.

The research questions were:

1)What is the extent of the faculty use of CMS on each campus and system-wide? 2) What factors encourage faculty to start using a CMS and, once they have started, what factors determine whether faculty increase or decrease their use? 3) For what purposes are CMS being used? 4) What pedagogical gains does using a CMS bring? 5) What barriers prevent faculty from using a CMS?

This presentation describes the current survey results. To date, over 1800 full-time and part-time faculty have completed the study at 24 of 34 institutions.
