Yerba Buena Salon 03 (San Francisco Marriott)
D-10: Paradigms, Practices, and Pedagogy
Detailed Description:How does course management software (CMS) improve the learning environment? What are some examples of ways NOT to use CMS? Why do we need a new pedagogical model for today's student? Can we determine best practices in an online/blended course and promote their use? These and many other questions are addressed in this Showcase that combines the "High Tech" of WebCT with the "High Touch" of Best Practices for Teaching and Learning.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The presentation will begin with how OVC has developed both a student and a faculty training program for using WebCT Vista that has had incredible success. The student training has been broken into several formats: traditional classroom, weekend "warriors", and ongoing (weekly)training for Teacher Assistants. Student training is based upon an overview of WebCT Vista, its communication tools, and how to submit assignments as well as "e-search" techniques. The faculty training is both ongoing (weekly) and has a weeklong training component to immerse faculty into both Vista and good teaching practices. For faculty, the components include an overview, communications tools, building courses, using good teaching practices and using the reporting/grading features. In both scenarios (student and faculty), examples will be given as well as demonstrated (to emphasize good teaching practices). The conclusion will draw out or "brainstorm" best practices as they occur at various sites and to disseminate that information.
