Abstract Text:In October 2002 the National Science Foundation awarded a five-year grant to the National Science Teachers Association, the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Science/Math Resource Center at Montana State University - Bozeman to develop and administer e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS) - an online mentoring program for science and math teachers. School partners currently include districts in California and Montana, with additional states being added in fall 2005. The eMSS project team partnered with the Burns Telecom Center at Montana State University – Bozeman to assist with WebCT design and provide support for the WebCT components of the program. Overall eMSS project goals include: improving middle and high school student achievement in science by developing e-mentoring networks; meeting a national need by developing standards for the mentoring and induction of beginning science teachers; and developing a national e-mentoring network to disseminate the model developed by eMSS.

This panel discussion will explore both the WebCT and program design issues involved in the administration of eMSS. This specialized program differs from a traditional online or face-to-face course and thus the implementation strategies for WebCT are as vital to the success of the program as the other key program components – mentoring and science content. Panelists will provide a brief history of the eMSS program and present current plans to make the program available to a national audience. Additionally, panelists will discuss various challenges in program design and provide strategies that were implemented to achieve success. Panelists will also discuss challenges in using WebCT to support the project and offer technical solutions for providing effective use of WebCT for specialized programs.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about the program and how WebCT has been utilized to meet program needs.
