Abstract Text:This panel presentation will discuss how attendance at the WebCT Impact 2004 conference in Orlando, Florida introduced faculty members and academic technology staff from Kean University, to a new world of possibilities related to using WebCT. The information we brought back has had a ripple effect throughout the campus. These effects were both philosophical and practical in nature, and occurred from the departmental to administrative levels. We will discuss three areas - the addition of Powerlinks to WebCT, the development of a faculty training program, and a proposal to deliver the Freshman Seminar class via WebCT. In the area of Powerlinks, we will discuss examples of programs which have been either introduced, implemented or are still in the development stage. Examples include using software programs compatible with WebCT (such as Respondus and SoftChalk), which facilitate content development, incorporating games into WebCT as self-assessment tools and linking live classroom and audio features to currently existing courses using WebCT. In the area of faculty training, we will discuss the development of a program which is offered to all faculty members and is also part of Kean's new faculty orientation program. Finally, we will discuss an ambitious plan to deliver a Freshman Seminar course, consisting of more than 60 sections using the Vista edition. This could lead to using WebCT Vista as the basis for an integrated student system, offering everything from a portal to a portfolio system for students.
