G-10: Video, Audio, and Chat with Flash and Flash Communications Server
Detailed Description:Classes such as foreign language or speech classes can benefit from the capability to see, hear, and respond in real-time. A video conference 'room' can be created as a standard Flash movie (.swf) that can be used on any computer that has the current Flash player. Other uses are possible, such as office hours or group meetings. This session will demonstrate this tool and discuss integrating a synchronous element into an asynchronous class.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, E-learning Managers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The current dominant paradigm for distance learning is asynchronous interaction (async). This means that the student is not time-bound and may study and interact at times that fit his/her schedule. This works well for many subjects, and there is much literature on developing asynchronous learning networks (ALNs) where we can harness async tools (e.g. discussion, e-mail) to enhance and enable learning in a powerful way.

Even within this framework, we have tools that allow us to communicate synchronously when appropriate (chat, whiteboard). This session demonstrates a synchronous video & audio tool that can be used for live meetings or presentations in a distance course. Using Flash Communications Server and simple Flash components, we can build and use video meeting tools that can complement our stable of async tools and techniques. It is also possible to record audio and video using this technology for an async component.

Using this technology can make it possible for classes that require more than textual interaction to be delivered in a distance mode. Foreign language classes would be obvious beneficiaries, as would speech classes, or any other class that requires live or recorded demonstrations of verbal proficiency. As an optional tool, many classes could also benefit.

This session will demonstrate using this tool in an interaction with a distant instructor and demonstrate the simplicity of creating audio/video chat rooms. We will discuss techniques for integrating the technology into the async class room, the advantages and disadvantages of using this particular technology and summarize other options.
