Abstract Text:This session will feature a re-conceptualization of professional development in WebCT, framed around cooperative learning strategies. This interactive showcase will focus on the design and implementation of WebCT faculty development workshops at SAIT Polytechnic. As a means of improving learning and facilitating a "transfer of training," the face-to-face workshops utilize small group problem-based cooperative learning strategies.

The Centre for Instructional Technology and Development (CITD) is the educational development unit at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. CITD is responsible for instructional skills development and support of SAIT faculty; part of that responsibility includes WebCT training and support for the 1000-plus post-secondary instructors. In an effort to model cooperative learning strategies and reap the benefits of cooperative learning, CITD re-designed its introductory WebCT workshops. Participants at these workshops work in small groups and perform structured cooperative learning activities in order to achieve the workshops' objectives.

This session serves two purposes:

1.Describe the initiative for the re-design and re-conceptualization of faculty development at SAIT Polytechnic.

2.Describe how small group cooperative learning and problem-based learning strategies are used during WebCT professional development workshops.

The session will feature a media presentation and informal group cooperative learning activities. The media presentation will focus on the design of the workshops, a description of the process, and recommendations by the facilitator. By engaging in informal group activities, session participants will be able to...

1.Appreciate the use of small group cooperative learning strategies within the context of professional development.

2.Assess the applicability of cooperative learning strategies to WebCT training.
