Detailed Description: | The Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences at Nova Southeastern University has a unique format for doctoral courses using WebCT. This session will discuss the benefits WebCT provides when teaching doctoral courses online. Additionally, live demo of a doctoral WebCT course will be provided with open interactive discussion on the overall challenges of teaching doctoral courses online and the benefits WebCT can provide including examples from the presented course. | ||

Abstract Text: | Many academicians claim that doctoral courses are not suitable for online environment. The Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences at Nova Southeastern University has a unique format for doctoral courses using WebCT. This format include a six month long term where students attend a first three-day weekend session (Friday to Sunday) on-campus (called “cluster”) and continue to work via WebCT for three months following the first cluster. After the first three months, students come for a second cluster weekend, followed by a second period of three months via WebCT. This unique format proved to be a very productive for doctoral level courses. In this showcase presentation session, faculty (both beginning and advanced) as well as administrators will learn about this unique format. A live demo will be provided of a WebCT doctoral course. Moreover, an interactive open discussion session will be offered and serve as a channel to engage instructors as well as administrators in the reduction of misconceptions associated with teaching doctoral courses online.
