Description: | The Universty of Utah currently offers 81 fully online, for-credit, semester-based courses serving approximately 3000 students. Most of these courses use WebCT as the course management system. This session presents the overall process supporting these courses, including providing administrative services that go beyond the course delivery of WebCT. Some issues include authentication with the campus system, exam setup, exam proctoring and student exam registration, and support issues for completely online courses. |

Abstract Text: | The Universty of Utah currently offers 81 fully online, for-credit, semester-based courses serving approximately 3000 students. Most courses use WebCT. Uonline was developed as an administrative system to serve the needs of students, faculty and program administrators. Interaction between these groups require a number of services that go beyond the abilities of WebCT. This presentation outlines the processes and systems that provide these needed services and allows for discussion of issues faced by fully online programs. Services provided by Uonline include: User Authentication - Uonline works with campus authentication so students and faculty need only use their campus login and password (as is the case with WebCT). In the case of the campus portal, additional logins are not required. Course Registration - All fully online courses are supported by Uonline. Infomation about the courses, registration details, status of the registration process and support issues surrounding the process are addressed in this system. Uonline provides automatic links to WebCT course Welcome Pages for course information. Rosters and email services are also provided to course instructors in the Uonline System. Exams and Proctoring - We have not found an adequate solution for electronic administration of exams. Exams are paper based. The University of Utah does not have an adequate testing center so we manage our own exam proctoring system. Most fully online students are campus students so exams are usually given on campus. Uonline includes tools for instructors to set up exam details (limits, dates, allowed materials, etc.) and tools for students to register for exams at local places, dates and times, such that facilities and proctors are managed well. For out of area students, we coordinate with the student, instructor and proctors local to the student to insure that exams are administered properly. Uonline also helps manage these out-of-area details. |
