This presentation is part of J-15: Vista System Monitoring
Monitoring the System for Maximum Availability

Description:Purdue has implemented a monitoring system to gain advanced notice of potential system problems and alerts of node failures. This information is used to minimize the possibility of an unscheduled outages and, if an outage does occur, to keep the duration as short as possible.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users

Abstract Text:As the number of hybrid and online courses offered at Purdue University has grown, the tolerance for unscheduled outages of the WebCT Vista system has shrunk dramatically. In order to help meet the increased demand for system availability, the Enterprise Learning Technologies (ELT) team has partnered with the IT Infrastructure group to implement a two-fold system monitoring solution. The primary purpose of this system is to provide warnings about issues which may potentially impair system performance, and the secondary purpose is to generate immediate alerts in the event that any of the nodes in the Vista cluster fail. An additional benefit is the ability to automatically execute diagnostic scripts in the event of non-fatal system errors. This presentation will outline the system parameters the ELT team has chosen to monitor, the reasons those particular parameters were chosen, and the process of deploying and configuring the monitoring system.
