Abstract Text:This presentation will provide the audience with an overview of the successful integration of institutional members involved in the Montana State University (MSU) Bozeman, Northern Plains Transition to Teaching (NPTT) program. The collaboration of these members, the functions each member fulfills, and how these combined efforts produce a national model for online licensure of secondary educators using WebCT, will be focal point of discussion. Specific topics will include the recruitment and administrative processes related to the NPTT office; registration, enrollment, and WebCT technical support through MSU Burns Telecommunication Center Staff; course content and instructional design by MSU faculty; and technical support for students/faculty related to design, development, and maintenance of NPTT courses using WebCT.

The Northern Plains Transition to Teaching program is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. It is a post-baccalaureate, online, teacher preparation program that provides a compact, rigorous, and diverse system of preparation moving professionals with records of excellence into new careers in public schools prepared to meet the needs of all learners and to continue their own professional development. The first three years of the program have proven to be very successful in that 149 students have been recruited and enrolled in NPTT courses. The first cohort completed the program in June 2004. These students are now employed, as teachers in high need school districts in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. These teachers bring life experience, content area expertise, and an understanding of the importance of life long learning to their new setting. The success of the NPTT program is a result of the ongoing efforts of a broad array of individuals and programs at Montana State University-Bozeman.
