D-8: Moving e-Learning to an Enterprise Level
Detailed Description: | Many institutions manage the growth of e-learning on campus through additional people or hardware. For e-learning to grow and thrive, it needs to be mission-critical. This session will discuss what it means to take on e-learning at an enterprise level in terms of resources, executive commitment and support, service to faculty and students, and return on investment. Participants will have a better understanding of how their institution can respond to the growth of e-learning.

Abstract Text: | Since its introduction in the 1990’s, e-learning has been growing rapidly at post-secondary institutions around the world. At leading colleges and universities, nearly all students now take at least one course that is e-learning enabled, and the number of classes and programs with e-learning components is growing rapidly each semester. For most institutions, simply growing the current CMS implementation by adding a person or a piece of hardware will not scale to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s demands. For e-learning to grow and thrive, it needs to be mission-critical. This session describes what it means for an institution to take on e-learning at an enterprise level: what it means in terms of resources, executive commitment and support, service to faculty and students, and return on investment. Participants will leave this session better able to judge how their institution will need to respond to the explosive growth of e-learning.
