Abstract Text:Software Secure tools enable WebCT users to attain the benefits of increased incorporation of computers in testing and teaching without the potential harmful consequences of electronic cheating and digital distraction (i.e., web-surfing). Testing in WebCT means easier and quicker grading, instant student feedback, and less administrative burden in creating tests. With Software Secure’s Securexam technology, these benefits can be attained without the possibility of student cheating during exams. Securexam Browser locks the student into a WebCT test and prohibits access to pre-existing information, the Internet, or the printing of test questions. With the increased number of computer labs and “smart” classrooms, high penetration of laptop computers in the classroom, and predominance of wireless networks in the classroom, faculty now can choose to use WebCT and the Internet as a teaching tool in class. While computers bring greater resources to the teaching process, they also often bring the classroom distractions of web-surfing, IM, and game-playing. With Software Secure’s Classmate product, faculty can now control how students can use their computers in class – keeping them focused on the task at hand by controlling when students have access to the network or their own desktop, suppressing specific Internet content, and administering real-time surveys. Examples will be provided of faculty members that are teaching in class with WebCT, Software Secure Classmate and Securexam Browser and Student.
