I-11: PowerLinking Your Way to an Enhanced Learning Community

Detailed Description:The integration of WebCT with Horizonlive, Wimba, Dreamweaver and Respondus has advanced the cause of online learning in a powerful and easy-to-implement way at Dalhousie University. Any institution investigating the value of these add-on facilities can benefit from our experience and discoveries during Fall 2003 and Winter 2004 terms.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The addition of PowerLinks to WebCT resolves long standing integration issues with other products in a seamless and easy-to-implement manner. This session focuses on the PowerLink enhancement between WebCT and the Horizonlive virtual classroom.

There are 250 students in my first year Commerce class. It is delivered in a blended way that includes a weekly lecture. The class is presented in a traditional lecture hall and delivered online in real-time via Horizonlive. Fifty to sixty students attend the face-to-face lecture. At the same time, twenty-four join the class online (25 is the current Horizonlive license limit for concurrent connections and one is required by the instructor). Students who are temporally or spatially displaced play back the lecture archive in the week that follows. All students earn an attendance grade regardless through one of the three methods: face-to-face, online in real-time or playback of the archive.

Prior to PowerLinks, the harvesting of user IDs from Horizonlive was subject to error and required an hour of administrative time to process and post. Since the implementation of PowerLinks, this time has been reduced by to ten minutes and is always accurate.

This important success story is of value to other institution investigating the integration of other add-on products. My goal is to share our experience from the position of an advocate of the PowerLinks solution. Although the Horizonlive is the selected focus, Wimba will be reviewed during the session along with how easy it is to integrate Dreamweaver and Respondus.
