M-12: Using Learning Objects to Deliver Technology Training to Students.

Detailed Description:More and more technology training is encroaching on classroom time. Villanova’s Center for Instructional Technologies (CIT) is developing a series of learning objects called ‘Techlets’ for use in WebCT by faculty who are interested in providing training materials to their students for self study. Techlets teach students the basics of various applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint, FrontPage and Flash along with IT system related training. This session will cover the development and delivery of Techlets.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Driving student success: Attracting, supporting and retaining learners
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:More and more, technology training is encroaching on valuable classroom time. Students, required to use various applications, often need to be trained. This training is sometimes taken on by the instructor. In-class training of software applications and IT systems takes teaching time away from subject related materials. Villanova’s Center for Instructional Technologies (CIT) is developing a series of learning objects, called ‘techlets’, for use in WebCT. These techlets are aimed at faculty who are interested in providing training materials to their students for self study. Techlets teach students the basics of various commonly used applications for example Microsoft PowerPoint and FrontPage, along with more discipline specific applications such as Photoshop and Flash. Additionally the techlets are used to provide training on the use of some of our systems, such as our CITRIX server, which is used to deliver applications over the internet. Techlets are packaged and available to all faculty members as WebCT learning objects ready for import into their course/s. This session will discuss the creation and delivery of the techlets along with a demonstration of their use within WebCT.
