Abstract Text:This panel describes centralization of support for online degree programs. The Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR), Ohio Learning Network (OLN), Division of Distance Learning (DDL) and Department of Business Technology (BT) collaborate to develop, promote and deliver high quality teaching and learning where and when needed. Our discussion illustrates the growth in Business Technology’s online degree programs: Accounting Technology, Business Management Technology, Marketing and Sales Technology and Technical Studies and its certificates in Accounting, Business Management Technology, Diversity Management and Marketing and Sales Technology. Distance Learning’s support mechanisms provide comprehensive faculty and technical support, network support via DL’s servers, program marketing, and comprehensive student services. These essential faculty and student services were beyond the resources of the academic programs to deliver. In effect, the presence of a centralized, comprehensive DL office has made their growth, success, and even their existence, possible while facilitating the acquisition of administrative tools, up-to-date computer hardware, course design software, student services, network technology needed for effective development, delivery and assessment of learning outcomes for these online programs. We explain how we have responded to the dynamics of growth by establishing a fast track associate degree program for students whose lifestyle circumstances had made completion of a degree at the traditional pace an obstacle but who need access to a degree program. The goal is to connect students to learning resources in new ways not previously available to them. We explain the adaptation of the traditional program to its accelerated online format and the steps taken to ensure quality learning outcomes. UT has been recognized by OBOR as leading the State in distance learning. This acknowledgement came as a result of collaboration that provides an accessible educational environment for today’s computer-savvy, place-bound learner and a dynamic infusion of new student populations to The University of Toledo.
