Abstract Text:The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology and Distance Degree Programs at Washington State University developed and implemented a course review process for online WebCT courses. The process involves developing courses before they are offered to ensure consistent required elements are present and to reduce customer support issues for distance students. This process has improved distance students’ experiences, and in this session we will outline our rubric, our process and show data about these results. The course review process was developed and implemented based on experience offering distance courses, and the issues associated with distance learning user support. As of February 2004,we have reviewed 53 courses; both newly developed and previously developed before the process was used. We will review the corresponding data, which shows the reduction in customer support issues since this process has been implemented. The social aspects of the process will also be discussed including faculty reaction to the process, enhanced unit-to-unit collaboration, and how we communicate the results of reviews to faculty. We will demonstrate the process by conducting a partial course review live during the session using a real course.
