E-16: Using WebCT to Conduct School-Wide Course and Instructor Evaluations

Detailed Description:The survey tool in WebCT makes it easy to conduct course and instructor assessments. However, there is often the desire to conduct these assessments independently of the instructor. This is especially true when there are multiple instructors whose evaluations must be kept confidential from each other. At Samford University, we have developed a process that, with minimal administrative overhead, allows for the administration of evaluations from a single WebCT "course" administered by the Dean's office.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Measuring outcomes: Student achievement and course success
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The survey tool in WebCT makes it easy to conduct course and instructor assessments. However, there is often the desire to conduct these assessments independently of the instructor. This is especially true when there are multiple instructors whose evaluations must be kept confidential from each other. This is a real challenge when the “shared designer” feature is used since all designers essentially share the same identity. One strategy is to create separate WebCT courses for each evaluation. However, this requires a great deal of administrative overhead. At Samford University, we have developed a process that, with minimal administrative overhead, allows for the administration of evaluations from a single WebCT "course" administered by the Dean's office. Students are pre-loaded into the course from our administrative student system and an administrator in the Dean's office then creates the assessment instruments and selectively releases them to the desired students. After the evaluation window closes, the administrator compiles the results for distribution to instructors and to the Dean.
